complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> an intense man hurnt is underway in southern california right now for an ex-cop who authorities say went on a king rampage. good afternoon, i am tory campbell. thousands of police officers throughout southern california and nevada are hunting for a former l.a. cop. police say the fired officer has been on a shooting rampage that has left three dead and several others injured. sal castaneda joins us now from the newsroom with more on the suspect and his dangerous crime spree. >> reporter: tory, the suspect is a tomorrow los angeles police officer who was fired in 2008 for making false statements. he is suspected of killing two people over the weekend and then shooting and killing a riverside police officer this

morning. 33-year-old christopher dorner is described as an african american man, 6'0," 270 pounds, last seen driveing a gray nissan pickup truck. he was seen here with then police chief william bratton, the police advisor relm hired by oakland. police say his crime spree began sunday night when he shot and killed a woman, monica kwan, the daughter of former police captain and her fiance, a 27-year-old man. last night police say he attempted to steal a boat from the harbor but was unsuccessful. now steal on the run dorner shot at 4 police officers at two separate locations ambushing and killing a riverside officer at a traffic light and injuring another. dorner is said to have a vendetta against all law enforcement but specifically l.a. officers who he accused of corruption and blames them for his unjust dismissal. in a press conference this morning the l.a.

police chief mourned the victims. >> the city mourns the deaths of monica kwan, keith lawrence, and our brave riverside police officer. i also feel great sadness for the injuries suffered by my officer, the second riverside officer and the two uninvolved citizens. >> the police chief mentioned the two citizens. police say officers fired on a car in torrance who they mistook for the suspect. s those two people were taken to the hospital and will survive. they say one of the most troubling aspects of this aspect is he has been using assault rifles and is heavily armed. >> well, of course he knows what he is doing. we trained him. he was also a member of the

armed forces. it is -- it is extremely worrisome and scary, especially to the police officers involved. >> here in the bay area and all over the state the changeable message signs have been flashing his license plates and a blue alert for all law enforcement in the state will be in effect until this incident is resolved once again this suspect has threatened grave violence against law enforcement and anyone who stands in his way. police say anyone who sees him should call police and consider him armed and dangerous. live in the newsroom, sal castaneda ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you sal. fire crews in contra costa county attacked a fire in a building in brentwood. it broke out there at 9:00 a.m. crews say the smoke was visible from brentwood. they had to bring in water because there are no hydrants

in that area. it is not clear if anyone was living in it. it appears to be a total loss. san jose police are looking for a probation violator who escaped from officers while being arrested. officers picked up anthony sanchez yesterday afternoon around 3:30. because he is a large man police used two sets of handcuffs linked together and while they were doing paperwork he maneuvered them, hop expwod the driver's seat of a police van and drove off. it was found near the expressway. sanchez is wanted on drug related warrants. here is a description of the 179. anthony sanchez is 32, latin organization 5'8," weighing 250 to 275 pounds and last seen weighing black sweat pants and a gray sweatshirt. this noontime police are investigateing a violent home invasion in vallejo in which three members of one family

were shot overnight. ktvu john sasaki is live with more on how the suspects got into the house. good afternoon. >> reporter: hey tory on the door to this home you can see how this shocking crime began. there is a shoe print next to the doorknob where one of the shooters kicked in that door. here is a view from chopper 2 hours after it happened. this morning two men broke into the home there. three people home, a woman and two of her children were all shot. the son was hit in the face, his mother in the hip and his sister shot in the hand. fortunately all three expected to survive their injuries. the family though is in shock. as yet police don't know what prompted this attack. >> at this point there is nothing to indicate that this was specifically targeted. there are no indications of that. so we are treating this as a random act. >> there was a burglary up the street a couple of months back but the people weren't there and nobody got hurt.

but this one, this is crazy. i just don't understand it. >> reporter: the two shooters are described vaguely as one latino man and one african american man both wearing dark hoodies and both still on the loose after this apparently random crime. we will be gathering more information all day and bring you the latest at 5:00. live in vallejo, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a power outage there has caused classes to be cancelled. an employee says several classes were cancelled this morning in the performing arts center and other classrooms, the rest of the campus was not effected by the outage. students are asked to check the web state for updates. san jose mayor chuck reid is set to deliver the state of the city address tonight. the speech is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the civic auditorium. the mayor's office says it will focus on crime prevention, pension reform happened the possibility of a sales tax

hike. a new survey shows voters supporting tax increases to pay for services and higher salaries for people like police officer who agreed to pay cuts in recent years due to budget shortfalls. this morning president obama attended the all national prayer breakfast in washington, d.c. the event featured a performance by italian singer bocelli. house democrats are expected to unveil their proposal for curbing gun violence, similar to the one proposed by the president. it includes a ban on assault weapons, and high-capacity magazines with more than 10 rounds of ammo, background checks for all gun sales and measures to prohibit gun trafficking. secretary of defense leon panetta this morning went before the senate armedded services committee to testify about the deadly terror attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. panetta defended the u.s. military's response to the attack that killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. he told the committee there were no specific signs of an imminent attack on that building. >> i firmly believe that the department of defense and the u.s. armed forces did all we could do in the response to the attacks in benghazi. we employed every asset -- >> he also said it would have taken at least nine hours to deploy u.s. gun ships or

fighter jets to the area. the government is still looking for those responsible for that attack. meanwhile secretary panetta is criticizing budget cuts that forced the department of defense to cut the number of aircraft carriers it has in the persian gulf region from two to one. planned for the uss harry s truman have been cancelled, he says a reduced military presence around the world effects the ability of the u.s. to respond quickly to a crisis. the pentagon has not yet commented on iran's broadcast of video it claims was extracted from a cia spy drone captured in 2011. the footage was broadcast on iranian state media and it has not been confirmed. it says it downs the drone there but u.s. officials say the drone mal functioned and crashed. iran is also claiming it can reverse engineer the drone and

cal trans is getting the word out about its latest tool to clear that. it is called that. when it goes into action it appears to have an accident. it swings across lanes but doing that on purpose so it can spread that across more lanes and remove snow and ice more quickly. cal trans wants drivers to know about it so they don't try to pass it. it will be used on 80 the next

time it snows there. delays are expected on the richmond san rafael bridge tomorrow night, new toll collection equipment will be installed there starting at 8:00 p.m. one lane will be closed there before the toll plaza. cal trans says closures may cause delays through march 5th. hercules police are investigating a violent road rage incident. a woman says she was assaulted by another driver tuesday afternoon near the intersection of sick sycamore and san pablo, she was punched in the face by the driver of a mercedes it all happened after other drivers honked their horns, the mercedes driver drove off and has not been located. they are searching for the cause of a house fire in san jose, janine de la vega tells us how it woke up the neighborhood and shows us the damage. >> reporter: this cell phone

video taken by a neighbor that shows flames shooting up from a house there. this fire started at 1:30 in the morning. fortunately it was vacant. a neighbor woke up to all the commotion think is his house was on fire. >> firefighters were spraying water on top of my house and when i looked out the window there was 5 fire trucks and lights flashing so i grabbed my baby and ran. >> firefighters started attacking the fire but the roof collapsed and they pulled out. it took an hour and a half to get it undercontrol. >> i was afraid the neighbor next door, in their 80s and not -- one of them is handicapped, if it caught to that house they would be in dutch so we knocked on their door to make sure they were okay. >> the fire gutted the home. you can see how it destroyed the roof and burned holes in it. they are straun straun all

over the property. no furniture were in that because no one was in it and they were in the process of remodeling it. he is a friend and says that. >> she is taking the position live goes on and it was a structure and happy for personal items of loss or you know physical injury. >> a fire investigator is expected to come out here later to gather evidence to determine an exact cause of the fire. reporting from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> high ranking officers in the walnut creek police department have a new contract that gives them a raise and lowers the amount they pay for healthcare. it covers 17 captains, lieutenants and sergeants after a pay freeze in 2010 the officers will receive a total of 8% in raises over the next 20 months. their cost for healthcare will drop from 10% to 9%. san jose state university's journalism department has

received an 8.7 million dollar gift. it comes from the estate of jack and emma anderson, whose company presented the school's newspaper in the 1950s and 60s. it is the 6th largest gift in the school's history. jack anderson died in 1989, emma anderson died last march. they designated a similar gift to santa clara university. the annual celebrity pro-am golf tournament is underway there and once against there are big names in the world of sports and entertainment taking part. fred english joins us live now from pebble beach. are you seeing big names out there? >> reporter: we are right at the very first hole of pebble beach here. you can see where the professionals tee off here. we have been dodging sprinkles but right now it is pleasant. definitely sweater weather but it is perfect golf weather for the pros and the celebrities. most of the celebrities, as you know, today are at the -- in a different course here.

snow is expected in the boston area. united airlines has cancelled 350 flights in anticipation tomorrow. american airlines already cancelled 43. that of course could have a ripple effect on flights across the country, including here in the bay area. people in road island where at grocery stores stocking up on supplies. the storm over the great lakes right now could merge with another storm over new england tomorrow. >> i will have the forecast model showing you the path in a little bit. first though we have some clouds to talk about and some rain showers. waking up early this morning with the rain clouds pushing into the region. san jose lingering clouds, the rain bands south down toward morgan hill and gilroy. right now on live storm tracker 2 the coverage really on the decrease. the focus in the south bay neighborhoods chose to monterrey bay and activity around 101 south of san jose

and zoom in tight closer to morgan hill and this activity towards watsonville oak region and that region there that is showing you that. current temperatures on the cool side mainly in the 50s at last check. livermore right now 51 degrees. santa rosa 54, san francisco checking in 53. as far as rain fall totals not too impressive, san francisco a 10th of an inch, oakland 0.06 and san jose 2/100s of an inch. a sun-cloud mix and a chance for showers this afternoon but a better bet the next round there is another round that moves in for this evening. tomorrow the chance of a shower cool out there, the weekend will be dry but the cool and breezy weather conditions stick around. here is the satellite and radar. first this front moving in earlier this morning. our nix cold batch of air moves in, unstable air this, could trigger thunderstorms later on this evening and possibly some low snow levels here in the bay

area down to about 2500 feet. here is our forecast model at 5:00. not a lot to show you but look at this band just offshore. you will notice it does move into the evening hours by 9:00 and even as we do head into the early morning hours of friday scattered showers and a possibility of thunderstorms, basically just into friday morning. this will be a snow producer out toward the sierra, winter weather advisory until 10:00 tomorrow morning. snow fall on the order of two to five inches. here that is 345 jor nor'easter developing and the forecast track for friday, friday night and into saturday. and look at all this coverage with this significant snow fall. temperatures we will have more on that coming up over the next few days of course. temperatures this afternoon mainly 50s for afternoon highs. the cool down has arrived. look ahead, get ready for more thunderstorms this evening. chance of a shower for friday. tory the weekend dry it will be dry but cool and breezy so keep the jackets around. >> all right. will do, thank you, mark. researchers make a potentially promising break through in the fight against breast cancer, hear why the

stocks are down as weaker earnings and worries about europe overshadowed healthier signs including fewer americans seeking unemployment benefits a sign of that. the dow down 51, the nasdaq down 14, the s&p down 4. researchers in minneapolis have made a potentially promising break through in the fight against breast cancer.
